QUESTION OF THE WEEK:
Why don’t we max out for every strength exercise? I like knowing how strong I actually am!
Several reasons. First, continually pushing your muscles (and joints, ligaments, etc) to the maximum capacity isn’t good for them! Second, providing variations in reps and sets (ie: 3×5, 7×2) keeps your muscles “confused”– they won’t get used to the same movement in exactly the same way, which encourages growth and progress. Third, your strength is not measured by raw numbers. Each movement in CrossFit synthesizes with others. Press/push press and handstand push-ups, bench press and push-ups, squats of any kind and wall balls– these are a couple examples of how movements are related to one another. Don’t forget that even if it’s not a “max out” day, you are still making improvements!
